Hilary Rosen - international artist
Hilary Rosen's biography, including current work in progress.
I am a professional international artist. I trained at the RCA and have lived and worked in London ever since. In addition to my own work I teach contemporary watercolour and drawing at an Adult Education College in London.
I had been involved in a project with The Wellcome in correlation with my studios. I am researching into vision and madness. The nascent idea came from a book called Treasuring The Gaze, which is essentially about Eye Miniatures that lovers gave their mistresses. discussing the social, psychological and cultural references to the images. I then became intrigued by the concept of The Ship of Fools and the symbolism and imagery involved with that idea in relation to the visual cortex and dementia. I envisage the outcome of this research to be interactive embroidery at The Wellcome Institute.
I work in many different mediums that include monoprints, oils, drawings and watercolours. The work is thematic, Cityscapes, Still Lives and the existential relationships between humans. A lot of my time is spent preparing images for the pictures in the way of drawing or making small watercolours in situ, for example in Soho or by the Thames then building them into more sustained images in my studio.
I recently had a one-person exhibition in Hamburg where I have been exhibiting for many years, as well as a one-person show in London.
A synopsis of my one person and group exhibitions include:
